SleepSeal say:-

The SleepSeal Inhalation and Open Valve devices have been found to be highly effective in keeping the lips closed in many individuals who experience mouth leaks while using CPAP or other forms of positive pressure therapy.

In addressing mouth leaks, it can provide a more successful alternative to chin straps or full face masks and commonly completely eliminates mouth leaks.

This valve allows the user to breathe in comfortably as needed, while maintaining the natural lip seal during sleep to prevent mouth leaks and air escape out of the mouth during the night. It contains a one-way valve that directs air into the mouth if the user needs to breathe in, while prohibiting passive exhalation or air leakage. The user is able to forcefully exhale as needed. This valve can be used with CPAP or other PAP therapy to reduce or prevent mouth leaks.

INSTRUCTIONS:-

  1. Before wearing the device, make sure you do not have any residual makeup, oils, vaseline or anything else around your lips that could prevent the adhesive backing from sealing.  Your mouth and lips need to be very dry.
  2. Remove the plastic backing from the device to expose the tape.  Be careful not to tear the flaps.
  3. Close your mouth and lips normally.
  4. Position the device's valve centred directly over closed, unpursed lips and firmly press the valve into the lips.
  5. Firmly press and rub the tape starting from the valve and lip area in an outward direction until all of the tape is sealed well onto the lips and skin surrounding the mouth.
  6. Breathe normally through the nose.

THE SLEEPSEAL DEVICES ARE NOT A TREATMENT FOR SLEEP APNEA; THEY ARE ONLY DEVICES DESIGNED TO MAINTAIN THE NATURAL LIP SEAL THAT NORMALLY OCCURS DURING SLEEP, IN INDIVIDUALS WHOSE MOUTHS FALL OPEN DURING SLEEP.

Sorry but this didnít work for me. Made no difference to sleep quality and was uncomfortable to wear. Left what felt like the beginnings of a cold sore on my top lip although it cleared within a few hours. Only had two samples so perhaps more time to adapt might have shown some improvement.

Shame your experience wasn't good Edgar, but like you say it's difficult to judge on a short trial, and you're welcome to order some more samples to have another try.

Not for me.
Thursday, 29 November 2018  |

On receiving the SleepSeals in the post I thought that it was a brilliant solution to help with the problem of mouth breathing and I was very eager to try them out but sadly when I tried one I found that it was impossible to speak with it attached.

I feel for some people this wouldn't be an issue but as I am disabled and not able to use my hands to remove it and if I needed to call my carer I wouldn't be able to shout out I found this too worrying. I did also find that it made me feel slightly claustrophobic but again it was only because I knew that I couldn't remove it and it made me feel that I might panic.

Amazing!!!
Thursday, 8 November 2018  |

Tried this product out a couple of nights ago and my verdict is......simply amazing!!!! I've been trying to become a 'nose breather' for a good few months now and this is extremely helpful. I was cautious about putting a seal on my mouth overnight, but once it was on it felt comfortable and natural. I woke up feeling better than usual. This is definitely a product i will be purchasing once available. Just hope the manufacturers put a reasonable price on it as it is single-use.

This is a great concept. Stays sealed all night. For me. its just getting over the idea of not being able to open my mouth, even when coughing. But would certainly use again.

The order is in my husband's name but this is my review. I found the Sleepseal much better than I had thought. It improved my leakage enough to improve my sleep a little too. I would use this in preference to a chin-strap or a neck pillow. I need a Bruxism guard and eye masks too so this seal is less intrusive that the other means of lessening leakage and as I seem to be mainly a nose breather I found just the difference this made good

Great to hear the improvement this made and definitely agree it's better than a chinstrap for those able to use them.

Prevents mouth leaks
Sunday, 14 October 2018  |

These certainly did the job and kept my mouth shut, preventing leaks. I usually use micropore tape to achieve the same purpose but the SleepSeal had a couple of advantages over the tape. Firstly, despite sticking effectively it was still easy enough to remove and gentler on the skin, unlike some tapes which can leave raw patches if pulled off too quickly. Secondly, of course, the SleepSeal has a small one-way valve which allows air to be taken in through the mouth if necessary, which is reassuring. I tried all three sizes successfully. They weren't sticky enough to use for a second night so my only reservation would be how much it would cost to use these regularly.

Good to hear you've found these good Sarah, and definitely safer than taping the mouth. We're hoping to have these by before the end of the year, and we'll obviously have to pay import fees, but Dr Black assures us they're trying their hardest to get these manufactured as cheaply as possible. We'll update everyone in future newsletters.

This reduced mask leakage somewhat but I found it fairly painful to remove. I found a chinstrap more efficient at reducing mask leaks.

Thought the sample valves worked really well - effectively keeping me from breathing through my mouth. Only minor issue was I found them a bit uncomfortable to remove because they stuck so well to my lips

Not for me
Friday, 21 September 2018  |

While the seal is perfect, and basically you won't be slobbering into your mask, I found the system obstructive in other aspects: impossible to cough; if you need to take a really large breath, you can't; if you have a runny nose and/or blocked nose, it may feel suffocating. So, in my own, very personal opinion, I would not buy this product in future.

Sorry it didn't work for you Enrico, like it has for many people. Unfortunately, we have to keep trying the different products until we find what works for us all.
